Aftercare For Your Tattoo

Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but it's important to take proper care of your new ink to ensure it heals well and looks its best!

Follow these aftercare instructions to promote healing and prevent complications.

1. Leave the bandage on for a few hours: Your tattoo artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a bandage or plastic wrap. This protects it from bacteria and allows the ink to settle. Leave the bandage on for at least two to three hours or as advised by your artist.

2. Gently wash your tattoo: After removing the bandage, gently wash your tattoo with room temperature water and mild, fragrance-free soap.

Use your clean hands and do not use a washcloth or sponge.

Pat the area dry with a clean towel.

3. Apply a thin layer of ointment: Once your tattoo is clean and dry, apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment or a fragrance-free, water-based moisturizer. Avoid petroleum-based products as they can clog pores. Apply the ointment two to three times a day for the first few days, or as recommended by your tattoo artist.

4. Do not scratch or pick at your tattoo: It's normal for your tattoo to feel itchy as it heals, but resist the urge to scratch or pick at it. Scratching can cause damage to the tattooed area and increase the risk of infection.

5. Keep your tattoo moisturized: As your tattoo heals, it may become dry and start to peel. Apply a thin layer of moisturizer to keep the area hydrated and prevent excessive peeling. Be sure to use a fragrance-free and gentle moisturizer.

6. Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight: Sun exposure can fade the colors of your tattoo and slow down the healing process. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the first few weeks after getting a tattoo. If you need to be outside, keep your tattoo covered with loose clothing or a bandage.

7. Do not swim and bath soak: While your tattoo is healing, it's crucial to avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and long baths. Submerging your tattoo in water can introduce bacteria and prolong the healing process. Stick to quick showers and keep your tattoo as dry as possible.

8. Wear loose and breathable clothing: Tight clothing can rub against your tattoo, causing irritation and slowing down the healing process. Opt for loose and breathable clothing that won't stick to your tattoo.

9. Avoid excessive physical activity: Strenuous activities like heavy lifting, intense workouts, or contact sports can cause excessive sweating and friction on your tattoo. Avoid these activities until your tattoo is fully healed to prevent any complications.

10. Follow your artist's instructions: Every tattoo artist may have slightly different aftercare instructions. It's essential to follow the specific guidelines provided by your artist to ensure the best healing outcome for your tattoo.

By following these aftercare instructions, you can help your tattoo heal properly and maintain its vibrancy. If you notice any signs of infection or have concerns about your healing process, don't hesitate to consult your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.
